Toyota Defies Critics with Record-Breaking Sales and Electrification Strategy

Despite initial criticism for its slow entry into the electric vehicle (EV) market, Toyota has proven its resilience and maintained its position as the sales leader in the automotive industry for the fourth consecutive year. In fact, the company achieved record-breaking sales figures in the latest reporting period.

Out of the impressive 11,233,039 cars sold by Toyota and its subsidiaries, the number of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 104,018 units. While this represents a significant year-over-year growth of 325.2 percent, it's important to consider the low baseline number. In reality, BEVs only make up 0.926 percent of Toyota's total shipments for the year.

Addressing the future of electrification, Toyota is committed to expanding its "Beyond Zero" (bZ) lineup with various electric models. However, the company anticipates that BEVs will remain a minority in its overall sales, estimating that they will only represent 30 percent even after diversifying its electric lineup. Toyota's Chairman, Akio Toyoda, stated in an interview with the Toyota Times magazine, "No matter how much BEVs progress, I think they will have a market share of 30%. That leaves the remaining 70% as HEVs, FCEVs, or hydrogen engines. I have no doubt that engine vehicles will survive."

While many automakers are focusing on eliminating CO2 emissions, Toyota remains confident in the future of combustion engines. The company has conducted experiments with modified hydrogen-powered engines, such as the turbocharged 1.6-liter, three-cylinder engine in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. Additionally, Toyota is exploring the potential of synthetic fuels and continues to invest in hydrogen technology, with plans to release an all-new Nexo fuel cell vehicle by 2025.

Although Tesla's success may raise concerns for Toyota, especially with the Model Y becoming the world's best-selling vehicle in 2023, there is still time for the Japanese automaker to develop EVs that appeal to consumers. Furthermore, rumors suggest that the European Union's ban on emission-generating vehicles may be delayed beyond 2035, potentially alleviating some of the pressure on Toyota. In the meantime, the company continues to leverage its expertise in hybrid technology, offering a wide range of hybrid vehicles in its lineup.

While some critics argue that Toyota's investment in hydrogen cars may be ineffective, the company's financial strength allows for experimentation and innovation. Toyota's ultimate goal is to achieve carbon neutrality throughout a vehicle's entire life cycle by 2050, including operations, manufacturing, logistics, use, and recycling.

In direct competition with Toyota, the Volkswagen Group secured second place in total deliveries, selling 9.24 million vehicles in 2023—an increase of 12 percent. However, Volkswagen outperformed Toyota in terms of EV sales, with approximately 770,000 zero-emission vehicles sold, representing a 35 percent growth compared to the previous year. The share of electric cars in Volkswagen's sales rose to 8.3 percent, a significant increase of 1.4 percent.
